What is Upward Bound?

The High School Upward Bound program located at the Metropolitan State College of Denver is a federally funded program designated to assist low income and first generation college-bound high school students. The HSUB Program in Denver has been hosted since 1973 by MSCD, one of the nation's premiere urban colleges.

Goals of the Program

Successful students will accomplish the following goals:

  • Develop the necessary skills and motivation to complete high school and to pursue post-secondary education.
  • Achieve a rating of proficient or above on state standardized tests .
  • Gain sense of career possibilities and opportunities based on seminars, research projects, field trips, and on-the-job training.
  • Meet higher education requirements to attend college.

The HSUB Program consists of an academic year, a summer module, and a bridge program for the college bound high school graduates. All program participants are involved in monthly social, cultural, and educational activities during the academic year component, and activities weekly during the summer component.

Who can participate?

An individual is eligible for Upward Bound if he / she:

  • Has completed the 8th grade and not yet completed the 10th grade in a target area school. These DPS high schools are: East, Lincoln, Manual, North, and West High School
  • Comes from a family whose taxable income does not exceed the income level set forth by federal government regulations. Income Guidelines
  • Has academic potential and needs further development in basic skills.
  • Has the desire to attend college with the goal of obtaining a four-year degree.

How are students selected?

Recruitment sessions are arranged with a contact person in each of the target schools.

  • Potential participants are excused from class to attend recruitment sessions.
  • Students then elect to complete a program application.
  • Selected applicants are then scheduled for a personal interview with a parent/guardian in attendance.
  • Selected participants begin program immediately.
