What is TRiO?

Our nation has asserted a commitment to providing educational opportunity for all Americans regardless of race, ethnic background or economic circumstances. TRiO programs help students overcome class, social and cultural barriers to higher education. Funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, the Federal TRiO Programs are:

  • EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY CENTER
  • UPWARD BOUND
  • UPWARD BOUND MATH and SCIENCE
  • RONALD E. MCNAIR POSTBACCALAURATE ACHIEVEMENT
  • STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES
  • TALENT SEARCH
  • VETERAN'S UPWARD BOUND

WHO IS SERVED NATIONWIDE?

Over 2,600 TRiO programs currently serve nearly 872,000 low-income Americans. As mandated by Congress, two thirds of Upward Bound TRiO participants served must come from families with incomes under $24,000 (family of four), where neither parent graduated from a four year college.

TRiO WORKS!

  • An estimated two million TRiO students have graduated from college.
  • Students who receive a full range of TRiO services (counseling, special courses and tutoring) are twice as likely to be retained in high school and throughout college.
  • Upward Bound students are four times more likely to earn an undergraduate degree than those students from similar backgrounds who do not participate in TRiO.
